Rain...Again

Calgary? What's up? I don't like all the rain. Sunshine if you are listening come out wherever you are. Hopefully the forecasted sunshine for the weekend is correct because we have a trip to the zoo planned.

I had an amazing lunch with my good friend, Charlee. There really is nothing more wonderful than lunch with a friend on a rainy day.

Come Again Another Day

Snow, snow, melt away and come again another day...another day months and months away.

A snow storm came raging through Calgary over the last couple days, but thank goodness today we have sunshine---YAY! The even better news is that I have started early work on a middle grade novel concept *excited grin*. I'm looking forward to a new writing project, but I don't expect to finish writing this one in a mere few weeks (this time I've got a toddler running around). I will update you as the concept begins to take a more concrete shape.

ONE LIFE editing is coming along! Very attached to my main characters Teddy, Kane and Leevi. Hopefully you all will love them as well.

Beautiful

What a beautiful day in Calgary! I bought a new pair of flip-flops and a pair of summer shoes. It's a perfect day for a trip to the ice cream shop. The plan for later is to spend the evening working on manuscript edits. I might as well dive in and get-er done.

Mother & Daughter Poem

You can see it in their eyes,
in tender hugs and long good-byes,
a love that only moms and daughters know.

You can see it in their smiles,
through passing years and changing styles,
a friendship that continually seems to grow.

You can see it in their lives,
the joy each one of them derives,
in just knowing that the other one is there...

To care and to understand,
lend an ear or hold a hand,
and to celebrate the memories they share.

Notice the Bumble Bee

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.” ~ Ashley Smith

Shifters

I can't believe it has taken me until now to read Rachel Vincent's Shifters series! I'm already into book two Rogue and eating up every page. It took me until halfway through Stray before the protagonist, Faythe, grew on me. I'll let you know what I think of the series once I'm done reading, but so far so good.

Reading

Alright, I have been reading up a storm this week. I finished Hourglass by Claudia Gray. Hourglass is the third installment in her Evernight Series. I read this novel super fast---it definitely kept my attention. I was surprised at the end and what happened to Bianca and Lucas---don't want to spoil it for you. If you read the first two installments Evernight and Stargazer think about picking this novel up at a local bookstore. I don't believe it is available to upload on a Kindle at this time.

I also finished reading The Return: Shadow Souls. Shadow Souls is the latest installment of The Vampire Diaries series, by L. J. Smith. Seriously, this book had me from cover to cover. It's not short. Okay, it's actually shockingly long for a young adult novel (599 pages), but I finished after reading until the early hours of this morning. The story is mostly about Damon Salvatore and Elena Gilbert's relationship and her bid to try and free him from his own mistrust of friends and family. I have always found Elena's connection with Damon more appealing than her relationship with his brother, Stefan. Other readers surely share the same sentiment after watching The Vampire Diaries television series. Be warned that the CW show is fairly different from the books.

Spoiler: The end of Shadow Souls has a twist that makes Damon even more complex...and lovable (if that was possible).

It Snowed

Snowy

Hello from snowy Calgary. El Nino has been friendly this winter, but our stretch of warmth has officially ended with the arrival of a mammoth dump of snow. I'm still wishing for an early spring.

My plan: Write for an hour, then cuddle up in a hoodie and pull a blanket up to my chin.

Have a Great Night,

Supernatural Love

There are many topics to write about but hands down love is the overwhelming favourite. Who doesn't like to watch a movie or read a book about love? Don't we all want to be loved? The most successful works of our time are largely love stories. Including: Titantic, Avatar, Star Wars, and even Harry Potter. I always have been a sucker for love stories with a supernatural element; hence, why I write young adult novels. I'm also a strong believer in the tortured love triangles where both characters have a preternatural abilities. Current examples of successful works along this line are: Stefan and Damon (The Vampire Diaries); Bill and Eric (The Southern Vampire Mysteries a.k.a TrueBlood); Edward and Jacob (Twilight). All three examples are commercially successful Vampire novel series but the concept works with zombies, werewolves, ghosts, angels, etc. There is a large and still hungry market of readers who want to crush on supernatural characters. These love stories are popular because readers (women in particular) don’t feel guilty or embarrassed about obsessing over characters they feel may not exist...or are not attainable (Hello! TwiMoms). The love triangle is a bonus because readers, notably young adult readers, want to have a choice to be on a 'team'.

Synopsis

Working on the ONE LIFE synopsis. What is a synopsis? A brief outline or general view, as of a subject or written work; an abstract or a summary.

I was super impressed by US snowboarder, Shaun White, last night during the men's half-pipe competition. The red-head stole the show! No one could come close to challenging for the gold. There have been no further gold medals for Canada...yet. :-)

Working

The Vancouver Winter Olympics are on. It is amusing to work with, "Sweeep! Sweeep! Sweep!" being shouted in the background.

I'm feeling very reflective about my writing lately. I've had to learn A LOT in the last year...both good and bad. I wish my first manuscript had a stronger opening. Oh well, you live and learn.

ONE LIFE

Thinking out loud about ONE LIFE.

To make up for lost time, sixteen-year-old, Teddy (Theodora) Owens is writing down everything that has happened since she discovered her ability to save one person from death. Her story begins two months before she makes an unbreakable promise to a handsome and arrogant young man she barely knows. For better...or for worse...this promise will change her life forever.

Certainly this concept will evolve, but feeling good about it.

Spreadsheet

Many writers create a timeline recording the activities and important information about the characters in their books. Major character milestones are recorded to help the writer remember important plot points.
Over the last week I made a spreadsheet and gave my ONE LIFE characters (even the minor characters) a unique birthday, death date, wedding date, day they bought their house, etc. I know the exact month/day/year sixteen years ago when one character immigrated to another country. Also, I have an exact month/day/year from twenty years ago when two characters were set up on a blind date. Each character's physical characteristics and country of citizenship are recorded. Is it strange I find this kind of work fun?
Other News: Vampire Diaries was A+ on Thursday (they did such a great job casting that show)! Check out the books by L. J. Smith, if you have a chance.

Sappy

I'm SUCH a sappy romantic. This is all I could think while reading through a particularly romantic scene in ONE LIFE. Seriously, I think teenage girls are going to eat this stuff up because this scene is ridiculously endearing...but suppose I'm bias. ;-)

Preface?

Here I sit with my chin in hand feeling particularly indecisive. What am I contemplating? Well I'm trying to decide whether or not to include a Preface with ONE LIFE. The preface would be a short informal letter written from the perspective of the main character (on a whim I wrote it at 1AM this morning).
For now, because I'm not sure if I believe in them, the preface is out. It should not be a surprise if I change my mind later.

Tweaking

Working hard on ONE LIFE this week. With the help of an early reader a few areas were identified areas that needed tweaking. I will spend the next week making many of the suggested changes.

Thanks for the song suggestion, Charlee! The Leona Lewis song Happy is very inspirational.

Excited About 2010

I am beyond thrilled to be almost finished (drum roll, please) another novel. 2009 was one of those years many people were thankful to leave in the past; however, I would not trade a moment. I learned more in the past year than most of the other years in my life. I can feel it in my bones...there is a lot to look forward to in the future.

Why am I so happy? 2009 was a year when I moved several steps closer to achieving my dreams. 2009 is when I saw several seemingly impossible things happen. I have nothing to stop me from believing 2010 and then 2011 will be spectacular.

ONE LIFE's estimated final word count is: 83,000.
Main Character: Teddy Owens a.k.a Theodora Owens
Blog readers can expect a short synopsis to be posted in the coming weeks.

My Cousin Once Mentioned...

My cousin who is also a writer once mentioned she felt depressed while writing about her character's depression. Cousin, I can relate. In particularly emotional scenes with heartbreaking loss I feel terrible for my characters. My goal is for future readers to connect with my characters and feel compassion for them...if the writer doesn't connect with their characters neither will readers.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2010!
